They knew enough to leave out that lyrics that would sound ridiculous if they sang it (“If just for a day our king and queen…”)

Just take it for what it was meant to be: an outsider paying tribute to Hawaii.

I hope PJ really knows how much we appreciated that performance. It’s very rare that a band will come to Hawai’i and cover a Hawaiian song from one of our greatest. This cover was definitely a surprise and totally unexpected. You can hear the crowd going crazy when they realized what he was singing. PJ is great

Listen to the lyrics. He only repeats the chorus, and and a couple of other lines.

Out of respect, he doesn’t sing the lines that reference “our people” or “our land”

The “stupid haole” who plays keyboard for Pearl Jam isn’t. He’s a local named named Boom Gaspar, who Eddie met while surfing. Eddie loves Hawaii.

wow i heard about this song/performance at aloha stadium and kinda thought it was wierd PJ would play this but they did it their own way and with respect…pretty mean!

beat eddie was small kine worried what ppl would think of him singing this song…i bet kelly slater told him to “run em hard” lol!
