in Hawaii Videos

A sailplane flight to 33561 feet in mountain wave over Mauna Loa volcano in Hawaii – the highest ever in Hawaii. Join me in the cockpit of a DG-400 sailplane and surf 6 mile high waves. Dave Bigelow Kamuela, Hawaii

Well he flew over the tallest mountain in the world…

@silentaviation I don’t know if this is the record, but NASA had astronauts do flights in Schweizer 1-36s at 30,000 and had them towed up to that height in very powerful towplanes within just minutes

    Was you’re coockpit pressurized?

@ash104 Thanx Ashy. I’ve driven above 10,000 ft before on some roads in the western usa.

  6. ash104

Anything over 10,000 then really you need oxygen

  7. glamterra

How long did it take to get that high? And what alt was he released?

Amazing video and a cool glider!

Amazing video. To people who’ve used gliders, does it really get harder to breathe up their or does the plane have it’s own supply of oxygen? I live on a mountain so I feel the pressure change every time I go down or up, and I can get snow when it’s rain in the valley but that (gliding) is far more drastic change in altitude.

Wow this is touching. Rest in peace… you will never be forgotten. He seems like such a nice, gentle person, really saddening, but he died doing what he loves, and he probably knew that :]

AWESOME – wow Dave, stunning and great shots inside & outside, love the detail & naration and stunned at the views. I’ve only been to 14.500′ above Scotland in wave and I thought I had a high tow at 6500′…. Unbelievable flight man.

    R.I.P. Dave.

If he’s flying a Dg-400, a self launcher, why does he need a tow?

  16. mjward99

Bravo……Nothing BUT respect…..Peace Brother……and let there be nothing but tail winds when you travel..

  17. Parakoopawing

    Respect!
I really want to do the same, too, but I think I still have to wait :D (I’m 14 and have flown about 50 times allone^^)

Gliders that want to go above 18000 need to have a mode c transponder, two way radio and prior permission. Usually, when its done in advance, they get their own block of airspace, vertical and horizontal that jets have to go around

Have not flown in umm..22 years.
Having watched these-i decided to get back into it,and get back up there.
VERY sad to hear that David died.
RIP man-Im sure you will continue to inspire others for a long time yet.
    Stunning stuff.

There is no class A airpace over Hawaii.

  23. DaveAtYouBoob

Call in and get clearance into Class A, they’ll give you a boundary.

  24. John19182004

airplanes above 18000′ have to be on an IFR flight plan – are gliders not required to be or how does that work?

    Great flying !
